Building Regulations Robust Details

Robust Details was an initiative formed in response to the house building industry's need for an alternative means of compliance with Approved Document E to Pre-Completion Testing. Robust Detail constructions are separating wall or floor construction that have been assessed and approved by Robust Details Limited, as capable of consistently exceeding the performance standards given in Building Regulations Approved Document E.

  • The objectives of the Robust Details scheme are as follows:
  • To provide consistent levels of performance that exceed the performance standards given in approved Document E
  • To include a safety margin to allow for normal workmanship variance
  • To reduce the effect of design/material weakness that influence the results
  • To include a broad range of industry products and practices
  • To provide sufficient clarity and instruction for correct implementation on site
  • To be compatible with other regulations e.g. Approved Document L and Health and Safety

Using a Robust Detail construction within a new build house or apartment avoids the need to carry out Pre-Completion Testing.

To use an Approved Document E Robust Detail, housebuilders must first obtain permission from Robust Details Limited and pay the requisite fee for each attached home. Plot registration forms and information on fees are available from Robust Details Limited or their website www.robustdetails.com

Provided the Robust Details constructions are then built correctly, this will be accepted by all Building Control bodies in England and Wales as evidence that the homes are exempt from Pre-Completion Testing. On completion of each separating wall and floor, the builder is required to complete a compliance certificate and pass it to their Building Control body.
