Gerry is 56 and has been with Isover for 11 years. He lives in Nottingham.
What are the main challenges for energy efficiency in the UK?
Government policies have focused on taking new houses towards zero carbon emissions which can be achieved relatively easily by evolving designs but the focus should switch to energy efficiency of existing houses. Because such a high proportion of homes are owner occupied, the real challenge is to educate and persuade the public to take action on a scale big enough to have any significance.
What is your company doing to promote energy efficiency in terms of products and services?
Isover in Europe has been involved in PassivHaus construction for many years and in the UK we have been making use of this global expertise in low energy design. As well as evolving our product range, including systems to deliver air tightness to zero carbon levels, we have formed a PassivHaus stakeholder group to offer a holistic design approach to housebuilders.
With Government initiatives/regulations in mind, how would you rate Gordon Brown’s achievements with regards energy efficiency?
Current policies on energy efficiency are largely a legacy of previous administration’s obligations to Brussels to combat the impact of climate change. Public disquiet over rising fuel costs has led to some initiatives from this administration, particularly those involving the energy suppliers’ funding of measures. As the cost of these is likely to find its way into fuel bills, more could be done directly by Government.
What are the main areas that we should be focussing on when considering energy efficiency? (renewable energy/insulation etc)
We should adopt the principles of the European PassivHaus, maximizing the insulation of the building fabric to the point where a conventional heating system is not needed. The design principles have been proven across Europe with the construction of many thousands of Passiv buildings, not just houses. Typically, renewable energy measures are not proven, not maintenance free, and with a long payback.
