Insulating against Passive House apathy
Players in the UK construction industry are becoming more familiar with European Passive House*1 philosophy although they still require guidance about what it means and what their options are, in a plethora of sustainable, ecological and energy efficient solutions, to turn the concept into reality.

The guide explains the basic principles and benefits of a Passive House approach that has been adopted in the UK by Saint-Gobain Isover insulation as the Multi-Comfort House approach.
While the UK does not suffer the extremes of temperature experienced in some other European countries that have had to build quickly and efficiently and to insulate their users against the worse of the elements, its climate is similar to that of Germany’s where Passive Houses are common.
Many believe aesthetics have been part of the reason why the Passive House concept has found it hard to find a foothold in the UK since (if construction costs are to be kept to a minimum) it prefers buildings of a simple, compact design.
Since every exposed or projecting part of a building increases its energy usage, minimising the envelope that encloses the volume to be heated reduces cost of construction and heat loss. All it requires is a bit more thought in the areas of envelope design, material, arrangement of windows and so on.
Hot water, household appliances and lighting account for only 25% of average energy consumption while the heating of interior space alone accounts for 75%.*2 Passive houses use the equivalent amount of energy required for heating hot water in a conventional house to heat the complete interior space of a Passive House.
The reason behind this very unequal breakdown is inadequate or incorrectly installed insulation. Heat escapes in winter and coolness does not last in summer. By improving the insulating envelope, it is possible to limit this energy loss and so reduce consumption - by up to 90% compared to existing building stock.
